Despite being battered by injuries, the Yankees rolled to an AL East title. Their lineup for most of the season didn’t come close to resembling the one at full strength, but in some cases, the replacements outperformed the ZiPS projections. Here’s a look at the statistics for the projected starter and for the player while playing the designated position:

Actual statistics (as catcher): 88 games, .816 OPS, 27 HR, 61 RBI
Time on the injured list: April 11-23, July 24 to August 9 and September 13-26.
Primary replacement: Austin Romine (25 games, .789 OPS, 4 HR, 18 RBI)

Projected starter: Luke Voit
Projected statistics: 129 games, .818 OPS, 22 HR, 75 RBI
Actual statistics (as first baseman): 82 games, .825 OPS, 10 HR, 36 RBI
Time on the injured list: June 30 to July 12 and July 31 to August 29.
Primary replacements: Mike Ford (17 games, .863 OPS, 6 HR, 11 RBI) and DJ LeMahieu (17 games, .941 OPS, 5 HR, 16 RBI).

Projected starter: Gleyber Torres
Projected statistics: 135 games, .815 OPS, 25 HR, 85 RBI
Actual statistics (as second baseman): 64 games, .796 OPS, 12 HR, 34 RBI
Time on the injured list: None, but Torres became the Yankees’ everyday shortstop from April 4 to June 6 to cover for the injured Didi Gregorius.
Primary replacement: LeMahieu (37 games, .782 OPS, 6 HR, 29 RBI)

Projected starter: Didi Gregorius
Projected statistics: 143 games, .783 OPS, .22 HR, 83 RBI (calculated for a healthy Gregorius season, although he began the season injured).

Projected starter: Miguel Andujar

Time on the injured list: July 21 to August 1, but the main story here was Gardner’s required shift to center field from Opening Day to May 15 and then from August 4 through the end of the season to cover for Aaron Hicks.
