David Torrence, a 31-year-old Olympic runner, was found dead Monday morning in a swimming pool in Scottsdale, Ariz.
According to the Arizona Republic, citing Scottsdale police, Torrence’s body was found at the bottom of a pool in an apartment complex. The Olympic runner, who lives in Malibu, Calif., was in Arizona training.
“Firefighters removed the male subject from the pool and he was pronounced deceased,” Sgt. Ben Hoster of the Scottsdale Police Department said. “Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play.”
Torrence, a Peruvian-American who competed for both countries, most recently for Peru in Rio in 2016, won silver medals for the U.S. in the 2014 World Relay Championships and the Pan American games in 2015 in the 4 x 1,500-meter relay and 5,000 meters.
In June, according to the Malibu Times, Torrence set a Peru record in the mile run — three minutes and 53.21 seconds — and the 1,500-meter race — three minutes and 34.67 seconds.
Friends of Torrence took to social media to remember him. American middle-distance runner Kyle Merber said that the Hoka One One Long Island Mile men’s race will be named after the late Olympian.
