ON DECK: METS AT ANGELS
It’s not going to be easy for Willie Randolph to keep his job, if he even has one by first pitch tonight (10:05 p.m., SNY, WFAN).
The Mets manager, being judged on a day-by-day basis, took his team to Anaheim to take on the AL West-leading Angels (42-28).
And GM Omar Minaya would not even guarantee Randolph would be filling out the lineup card for tonight’s game.
“It’s out of my hands,” Randolph said. “I’m here to do a job and hopefully I’ll be here for a long time. … I don’t know what people around here are thinking. I can’t assume anything. I haven’t heard from anybody.”
If the entire Mets team (32-34) can respond the way Mike Pelfrey has to adversity than Randolph can relax.
Pelfrey’s run as a starter seemed destined to come to an end with Pedro Martinez returning to the rotation and Claudio Vargas performing well. But on May 31, Pelfrey shut down the Dodgers followed by impressive performances against the Padres and Diamondbacks. Thanks to a stumbling offense and a bumbling bullpen, he has no wins to show for it, but he will look to continue his domination of West Coast teams tonight.
“I think he’s starting to get it,” Billy Wagner said after Pelfrey’s start against the Diamondbacks. “I think he gets the idea of getting ahead and throwing strikes and good things tend to happen when you do that.
“Tonight, his whole repertoire and his whole demeanor showed why he was a No. 1 (draft) pick.”
Wagner blew that win for Pelfrey when the closer allowed a two-out, three-run homer to Mark Reynolds after Pelfrey gave up one run over eight-plus innings.
Pelfrey has not had a win in 10 starts. A span where he has picked up six losses and is one shy of matching last year’s seven-game slide.
“There’s days when they’re going to go out and put up a 10-spot on you and days when you’ll go out and give up five, six runs and you’ll get a ‘W,'” Pelfrey said. “You can’t control it, but you still have to go out there and put the team in a position to win.
“If I go out there and if I think that I threw the ball well and put the team in a position to win, what else are you going to do?”
Tonight’s Pitching Matchup:
Mets RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-6, 4.24 ERA) Pelfrey’s start in San Diego was the first effective road start he had all season. In the first three appearances away from Shea, Pelfrey allowed 15 runs in 14 innings against the Phillies, Diamondbacks and Braves — all Mets losses.
Angels Jered Weaver (6-6, 4.45 ERA) The fact Weaver shut down the Rays, one run over eight innings, in his prior start could be a good sign for the Mets. He has had three other dominating performances like that this season and followed it by giving up a combined 13 runs in 15 innings.
