Giancarlo Stanton shook his head after getting drilled in the side by a 90 mph fastball from Yefry Ramirez to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but the Baltimore right-hander insisted there was no intention.
“Unfortunately, I missed a pitch,’’ Ramirez said through an interpreter. “I didn’t make the pitch I was looking for. I tried to throw a quality pitch inside to him. I definitely do not want to put on the first batter of the inning.’’
Stanton came around to score the first run of the Yankees’ four-run fifth in their 6-3 victory over the Orioles on Tuesday night.
In addition to losing a very popular reliever in Adam Warren, who was dealt to the Mariners on Monday, the Yankees lost their representative to the Players Association. David Robertson was the assistant and will assume Warren’s duties. Greg Bird is likely to get into the mix as well.
“It was difficult telling a guy who was beloved in the [clubhouse],’’ Aaron Boone said of the right-hander, who was traded for international signing pool money. “It’s a difficult situation.’’
Gary Sanchez rode an exercise bike on Sunday as he makes his way back from a right groin injury that landed him on the DL for the second time this season.
“Slow moving but I would say in the early stage of the return,’’ Boone said.
After elevating lefty reliever Ryan Bollinger from Double-A to the big leagues before Tuesday’s game, the Yankees sent him back to Trenton following the victory. Bollinger was needed in case the Yankees had to fill in innings, but that wasn’t the case. Lance Lynn, who is arriving Wednesday, will take Bollinger’s place.
The Yankees’ 21st sellout of this season established a record for the latest Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009. The old record was 20 set in 2011.
