This is not the kind of baseball giveaway fans want any part of.

The Padres halted distribution of beach hats as a giveaway on Saturday after experts found what they believed to be grain beetles — microscopic insects known to infest stored dry goods — in some of the packaging containing the items.

The Padres said in a statement they were told the grain beetles “pose no health risks to humans,” but that they “decided to act out of an abundance of caution.”

It was not immediately clear how the beetles were discovered. Fans who were given the hats before the game against the Rockies were asked to exchange them for vouchers.
