MLB.com reports that Pedro Martinez’s return to the Mets has been delayed by a medical episode involving his ailing father, Pablo, in the Dominican Republic.

According to Mets.com, “the Mets pitcher, close to ending his assignment on the disabled list, returned to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday morning after receiving word that the condition of Pablo Martinez had worsened. The Mets had no sense of how the latest development would affect the schedule for Martinez’s return to active duty.”

Martinez, who has been sidelined since April 1 with a strained left hamstring, was scheduled to join the Mets in Atlanta today to throw a bullpen session for Willie Randolph and pitching coach Rick Peterson.

Martinez’s 78-year-old father has a form of brain cancer.
