Pedro Martinez rarely backed down from criticism as a player, and he’s not letting it change his opinion as a broadcaster, either.
After getting pushback from his tweets saying the Yankees lack energy — Brett Gardner suggested Martinez’s comments have to do with his loyalty to the Red Sox — he doubled down on those thoughts during a segment on MLB Network.
“I’m not irresponsible for saying what I’m saying. I’m being honest and anybody out there can go ahead and criticize me as much as they want,” Martinez said Wednesday night. “But what I’m saying is the energy I see in teams that win the World Series or win a postseason spot is different from the one I’m seeing from the Yankees right now.
“My own experience is telling me, experience I lived, is I’m not seeing the energy in the Yankees.”
Martinez went on to say the Yankees are a good team and he respects them, but he’s noticed bad signs over the last month, since they were swept by the Red Sox and have fallen way behind in the AL East.
“That’s not the team that played the Red Sox early in the season,” he said. “What I’m seeing lately, especially here in this Marlins series, is not the Yankees I’m accustomed to seeing.”
The Yankees split a two-game set with the woeful Marlins and sit nine games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.
