ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte is set to rejoin the rotation on Sunday.
Joe Girardi announced the plan for Pettitte before Wednesday night’s game against Tampa Bay. Pettitte has been sidelined since June 19 by a strained left groin.
With his return, Javier Vazquez will shift to a long relief role.
A.J. Burnett will start the opener of a three-game series at Baltimore on Friday. CC Sabathia will pitch Saturday, which also lines up the 19-game winner to face Tampa Bay’s 17-game winner David Price five days later in the final game of a four-game series with the Rays at Yankee Stadium.
According to Girardi, Pettitte will be limited to about 75 pitches against the Orioles.
“You are not going to get seven or eight innings although he might be able to do that,’’ pitching coach Dave Eiland said. “Five or six innings and keep us in the game.’’
Pettitte, if healthy, is guaranteed three starts before the postseason opens Oct. 6 with Game 1 of the ALDS against an unknown opponent.
Vazquez said he was disappointed by his demotion.
““It’s always disappointing. … But there is nothing I can do. But Andy is coming back, we need him here. I’m glad he’s back,’’ said Vazquez, who didn’t get a decision in his past two starts in which he posted an 8.39 ERA and allowed 10 hits and six walks in 9 2/3 innings.
Vazquez will be in a three-man competition to see who will be the long man in the bullpen for the postseason. Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre are the other candidates.
