The Yankees and Mets had sparks fly on Sunday. From whistling to benches clearing to three Francisco Lindor home runs, the lights shined bright on ESPN’s Sunday night Subway Series finale. It capped off a memorable weekend in Queens that also featured an emotional pregame ceremony on Saturday on the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. If you were sleeping on the Subway Series, this past weekend woke all the naysayers up in what was a pivotal series in the midst of a September playoff push as both teams are trying to cement themselves a spot in October.
There was lots to unpack and break down from the weekend on a special “Pinstripe Pod” meets “Amazin’ But True” Subway Series crossover podcast with former Yankee Jeff Nelson, former Met Nelson Figueroa, Chris Shearn and me.
Pinstripe Pod meets Amazin’ But True with Chris, Jeff, Jake & Figgie:
- SUBWAY SERIES: Francisco Lindor made a statement on Sunday with his three-homer game. Both teams were fighting for a playoff spot. It was a very long game in a series of long games. There is no true ace anymore as pitchers have trouble getting through five innings. We get into the benches clearing and how it all transpired. Nellie talks about meeting Leonardo DiCaprio on Sunday and his disappointment in him not being a nice guy.
- 9/11 TRIBUTE: Saturday was emotional at Citi Field. Was great to see fans unite like they did and see 43,000 people there. Nellie loved the ceremonies before the game. Also found it laughable that some Mets fans look at the Subway Series as their World Series. Figgie looks back to being on the Phillies in 2001 and being in the ballpark for the “U-S-A” chants and how it happening on Saturday in Queens was a great moment. Baseball brings joy and unity to so many.

Shearn & Nellie Segment:
- YANKS’ ROUGH WEEKEND: Their defense is costing them. The bullpen is shot right now and not sure they can last the rest of the season. Shearn thinks their season is done because the bullpen is gassed. The only way the Yankees can win a World Series is with a different analytical approach than what they are doing.
- FRUSTRATIONS: Shearn goes on a rant on analytics in the game today and games being much longer. Hard to watch sometimes how the game is playing and how stats are changing everything. Shearn believes Aaron Boone is going to be back next season. Do they need a new manager? Will they make the playoffs?
