MLB is coming back in the hands of its stars — literally.
While the coronavirus pandemic continues to shut down the real baseball season, 30 players, one representing each team, will get on their video-game controller and take part in “MLB: The Show” Players League, MLB announced Friday. Jeff McNeil will play for the Mets, while Tommy Kahnle will be the Yankees’ gamer.
With the action set to begin Friday night — live-streamed on digital platforms including Twitch and YouTube — each player will face every team once in a round-robin format throughout April, making for 29 regular-season, three-inning games. The top eight teams will advance to the playoffs and a champion will be crowned with a World Series.
The league will raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Canada, with MLB, the MLB Players Association and Sony Interactive Entertainment donating $5,000 on behalf of each player. The champion will win an additional $25,000 for their team’s local Boys & Girls club.
Other notable participants include Rays pitcher Blake Snell, Nationals outfielder Juan Soto and Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
