Don’t print those playoff tickets just yet, and hold off on planning the parade down the Canyon of Heroes, Mets fans.
The oddsmakers aren’t buying this Mets renaissance just yet.
Despite sweeping the Nationals this weekend to move into a virtual tie atop the NL East and adding four key parts — outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, infielder Juan Uribe, infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson and reliever Tyler Clippard — before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Mets still have to prove plenty of people wrong.
Fangraphs.com still has the Mets as an underdog to reach the playoffs, giving them a 37.2 percent chance. The website gives the Mets a 30.5 percent chance to win the NL East and just 2.2 percent chance to win their first World Series since 1986.
The Mets’ odds, according to Bovada.lv, have improved to win the World Series, up to 14/1, after being 33/1. The Yankees, meanwhile, are 10/1, trailing just the Royals (6/1), Dodgers (7/1) and Cardinals (8/1). The Blue Jays and Nationals are also 10/1 to win it all. The Mets and Yankees are at least in the mix, both in first place in August for the first time since 2006.
Though the oddsmakers expect the Yankees, who own a six-game lead over the Blue Jays and Orioles, to stay atop the division. The Bombers are 1-3 favorites in the AL East.
