A few things going on at Shea Stadium before tonight’s matchup with the Braves, so here is the update:
— Brian Schneider is going to be hospitalized through at least Sunday morning (he was there last night, too) and is on antibiotics for his infected left thumb. When Schneider will return or how serious the problem is seems to be kind of unknown. He’s listed as day-to-day.
— The Mets may get more production out of first base tonight -â no Carlos Delgado. Willie Randolph is giving him a rest, saying, “Maybe he just needs a break.” Marlon Anderson is at first.
— Moises Alou isn’t in left field for the Mets, but he’ll play for St. Lucie tonight. Ramon Castro also caught six innings in an extended spring training game.
— Fan favorite -â that’s tongue in cheek, by the way â- Tom Glavine is here with the Braves, even though he’s on the DL with a strained right hamstring. Glavine hopes to pitch Tuesday.
One quick Glavine quote (more in tomorrow’s Post) on whether he’s curious about the reception here: “I guess there’s always some curiosity. I guess I’m prepared for the worst. But I don’t know. The people that I ran into today around the city were nice and cordial, but I know it’s always different when you get here and get in the ballpark. I guess I’m prepared either way. I’ll understand it either way. Just hopefully it doesn’t get any crazier than that.”
