Willie Randolph didn’t like Billy Wagner going so public with his criticism of Oliver Perez on Wednesday. Saying he thought it should have been “kept in-house,” Randolph confirmed tonight that he met with Wagner to admonish the veteran closer for his public criticism of Perez.

Wagner blasted Perez’s mental toughness and attention span on Wednesday after the young left-hander lasted just 1 2/3 innings in a 13-1 loss to the Pirates just hours after the Mets had used almost their entire bullpen in an 11-inning win.

“I wouldn’t go that route, but that’s Billy,” Randolph said. “Billy gets a little emotional at times. If he feels that way, that’s fine. Billy doesn’t speak for the team. That’s just him. That’s just his opinion.”

Wagner refused to back down from his Wednesday comments but said he hopes the issue blows over in light of the meeting with Randolph.

“I’ve done all the talking about that,” Wagner said. “It’s all been taken care of now, and we don’t have to worry about it. Everybody knows where I come from.”
