Randolph scolds Wagner
Willie Randolph didn’t like Billy Wagner going so public with his criticism of Oliver Perez on Wednesday. Saying he thought it should have been âkept in-house,â Randolph confirmed tonight that he met with Wagner to admonish the veteran closer for his public criticism of Perez.
Wagner blasted Perezâs mental toughness and attention span on Wednesday after the young left-hander lasted just 1 2/3 innings in a 13-1 loss to the Pirates just hours after the Mets had used almost their entire bullpen in an 11-inning win.
âI wouldnât go that route, but thatâs Billy,â Randolph said. âBilly gets a little emotional at times. If he feels that way, thatâs fine. Billy doesnât speak for the team. Thatâs just him. Thatâs just his opinion.â
Wagner refused to back down from his Wednesday comments but said he hopes the issue blows over in light of the meeting with Randolph.
âIâve done all the talking about that,â Wagner said. âItâs all been taken care of now, and we donât have to worry about it. Everybody knows where I come from.â
