CHAMPIONSHIPS are like children: you’re supposed to love them all the same.
Still, the Yankees have 27 of them, and every time they add to that pile it is a reminder of just how rich and how vast their pedigree truly is.
And it is only natural to wonder where the latest addition — and edition — ranks with all that came before. A million people probably would come up with a million different orders. Here’s one:
1. 1927 Hard to top a 110-44 record, a four-game sweep in the World Series and a heart of the order, 3-6, of Ruth-Gehrig-Meusel-Lazzeri.
2. 1998 Nobody ever has won more than the 125 games this bunch did, and it was done without anyone hitting more than 28 homers.
3. 1961 Maris and Mantle combined for their 115 home runs, and Ford went 25-4, and three catchers — Howard, Berra, Blanchard — hit 20-plus homers.
4. 1939 Won 106 and swept Reds and outscored opponents by a staggering 411 runs during season, meaning average game in ‘39 was Yankees 6, Other Guy 3.
5. 1999 Core of ‘98 returned, subbing Clemens for Wells, and while they won 16 fewer games in regular season, went unprecedented 11-1 in playoffs.
6. 1932 The last hurrah of Murderers’ Row: 107 wins, sweep of Cubs in World Series (outscoring them 37-19), and the Bambino’s called shot in Game 3.
7. 1978 Had to play near-perfect baseball for three months to catch and then hold off Red Sox, then came from 0-2 down to win four straight over Dodgers.
8. 2009 Went 90-44 over last 134 games, then never faced an elimination game in the playoffs with All-Stars or former All-Stars at seven of nine slots in batting order.
9. 1936 First of three straight titles won by Gehrig/DiMaggio pairing; scored staggering 1,065 runs in regular season (6.9 per game) and beat Giants in Series.
10. 1923 The first championship, in the first year of old Yankee Stadium with Ruth (.368, 3 HRs, 8 RBIs) leading the way.
11. 1928 Qualify follow-up to ‘27 team that not only won 101 games but beat Cardinals to avenge ‘26 Series loss.
12. 1951 All the attention always goes to NL race, but Yankees battled Indians all year before overtaking them in September. And they did what the Dodgers couldn’t.
13. 1937 Think about this as a 3-4-5 in batting order: DiMaggio (.346, 46 HRs, 167 RBIs), Gehrig (.351, 37, 159) and Dickey (.332, 29, 133).
14. 1977 Overcame infighting and owner/manager silliness to win 100 games, come from behind in last inning of ALCS and then let Reggie do the rest.
15. 1996 Probably the most beloved of the post-renovation Yankee Stadium Yankees, since so little was expected and so much was delivered.
16. 1949 Sped to big lead over Sox without DiMaggio, fell behind them, then won last two games of season at Stadium for Stengel’s first hurrah.
17. 1941 Slumbered through first month and a half, then were scalding during DiMaggio’s Streak. Beat Dodgers handily thanks to Mickey Owens’ passed ball.
18. 1953 Yankees take over first place on seventh day of the season and never relinquish it, and roar to an unprecedented fifth straight championship.
19. 1956 Yankees snapped what was then an “endless” two-year title drought thanks to Mantle’s Triple Crown and Larsen’s perfecto.
20. 1947 Yankees on losing end of two forever highlights (Cookie Lavagetto’s hit, Al Gionfriddo’s catch), but beat Dodgers in seven nonetheless.
21. 1962 This team won 13 fewer games than in ‘61 and M&M boys hit 52 fewer homers, but still ran away with AL and held off powerful Giants in Series.
22. 1952 Yanks are in sixth place as late as June 1, then have to win Games 6 and 7 in Ebbets Field to keep Dodgers searching for Next Year.
23. 1938 First time the cry of “Break up the Yankees” was heard; Yankees overcome Gehrig’s first “sub-par” season and DiMaggio’s spring holdout.
24. 1950 Yankees roar past Red Sox in early September (last time they’d be in each other’s way for 27 years), then overwhelm undermanned Phillies.
25. 1943 Yanks’ lone war-era title won with help of unlikely stars Nick Etten (107 RBIs) and Spud Chandler (20-4, 1.64 ERA).
26. 1958 92 wins was the lowest of any Yankee pennant winner since ‘26, but avenged loss to Braves in ‘57 Series by erasing three-games-to-one deficit.
27. 2000 City enjoyed first Subway Series in 44 years, but Yanks won with perhaps least-potent team, with only 87 regular season wins.

VAC’S WHACKS
When the Yankees have long stretches of winning, it is usually because they don’t let sentiment get in the way of business. They signed Goose Gossage in 1977 even after Sparky Lyle had just won the Cy Young. They refused to overpay to keep John Wetteland even after he won the World Series MVP in 1996 because they had Mariano Rivera in waiting. If it was good business to let Hideki Matsui go all the way up to around 9 o’clock Wednesday night . . . well after the emotion dissolves, it’s likely they will still see it as good business.

I don’t want to be misinterpreted here: the Giants must win this game against the Chargers over in Jersey today. Yes, in Week 9, we have our first must-win.
*
Watching the Knicks so far has been like digging into a steaming bowl of farina: you know it is going to be awful, and it has managed to be even worse than that.

It is impossible to fathom a show being as good, as consistently, as “Curb Your Enthusiasm” so far this year.
