Xander Bogaerts and the Red Sox are close to a contract extension, according to WEEI Radio in Boston. It is a seven-year, $132 million deal that would begin this season and has an opt-out, according to ESPN.
The agreement is not finalized, but there is a “strong likelihood” it will be announced Monday, WEEI reported. Bogaerts is making $12 million this season and would have become a free agent in 2020.
The 26-year-old shortstop is a one-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner. Bogaerts batted .288 last season with a .360 on-base percentage and a .883 OPS while hitting 23 homers and collecting 103 RBIs.
