At least one Yankee was sad to see Sonny Gray go, and believes the Reds made out well in the trade.
“Cincinnati got a steal,” starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery told NJ.com on Thursday.
The Yankees sent the disappointing right-hander to the Reds for minor-league second baseman Shed Long, who was immediately traded to the Mariners, in January. Gray was then given a three-year, $30 million deal by his new team.
“That’s why Cincinnati locked him up as fast as they could have,” Montgomery said. “I think, for his sake, I think we’re going to see the guy who was in Oakland, a top-three Cy Young winner and I think he’s going to get back to form and be the guy he’s always been.”
After coming to The Bronx from the A’s, Gray bombed, going 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 11 starts in 2017. He wasn’t much better in 2018, posting an 11-9 record and 4.90 ERA, leading to the offseason trade.
“He’s getting paid $30 million — I think he’s the caliber pitcher who should be way more than that. He out-dueled Justin Verlander [in the playoffs in 2013],” Montgomery said. “He’s just got electric stuff. He’s confident out there.”
