If the Yankees were hoping to land Trevor Bauer, they lost their chance.
The controversial Cleveland Indians right-hander was traded to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night as part of a three-team deal that included the San Diego Padres, according to ESPN.com.
The Reds shipped outfielders Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes, utilityman Victor Nova left-handed pitching prospect Scott Moss to the Indians as part of the deal, according to multiple reports. The Indians also got right-hander Logan Allen from the Padres.
Reds outfield prospect Taylor Trammell was shipped to San Diego.
Bauer talked and exchanged hugs with several teammates in the clubhouse following Cleveland’s 2-0 loss to the Houston Astros before he departed around 10:45 p.m. He declined to speak with reporters.
Though Bauer isn’t the same pitcher as he was in his breakout season, the right-hander had been solid, but a bit inconsistent for the Indians. He is 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA and 185 strikeouts.
The controversial 28-year-old was fined by Major League Baseball earlier in the day for heaving a ball from the pitcher’s mound over the center-field wall at Kansas City last weekend. Bauer, who is making $13 million this season, isn’t a free agent until after 2020.
Puig, who has had his share of controversies throughout his career, was ejected in a big brawl in Tuesday night’s game against the Pirates.
“I’m going to miss all my teammates here,” Puig said after the Reds lost 11-4 to Pittsburgh. “This part of the year is amazing for me, being on this team and the city. Now it’s time to move forward and go to my new team and help my team go to the playoffs. … I want to say thank you to all the city, Cincinnati. We stay next door — we’re going to Cleveland.”
Puig, who is facing a possible suspension for his part in the brawl, is batting 252. with 22 homers and 61 RBIs. The Cuban-born outfielder has a career .275 average with 130 homers and 391 RBIs in 812 games. He’s eligible for free agency after the 2019 season.
The 24-year-old Reyes hit .255 with 27 homers and 46 RBIs in 99 games with the Padres this season. In his last 29 games, the right-handed hitter is batting .290 with eight homers and 13 RBIs.
