SAN FRANCISCO — Jose Reyes was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game tonight due to a calf strain, but Jerry Manuel all but guaranteed Reyes would be back at shortstop Saturday. “He has improved, and that’s the good news, but we felt if he played [last night] he probably wouldn’t play [today],” Manuel said before tonight’s game. “With it being a cool night and the injury involving a muscle, we didn’t think it would be a good idea.”

Reyes tested his calf during pregame workouts and told Manuel the pain hadn’t gone away entirely. At the same time, Reyes is finding it hard to contain his excitement on the bench.

“It’s tough, because I always want to be out there and I want to be helping my teammates,” he said.

Alex Cora replaced Reyes at shortstop for the second consecutive game and also occupied Reyes’ usual leadoff spot.
