PORT ST. LUCIE — Jose Reyes hit the first pitch he saw Monday for a two-run triple in his first game-like setting since he was sidelined for most of last season by an injured right leg.

Reyes came to the plate against Tobi Stoner with runners on first and second and drilled the first pitch into the right-field corner. He raced easily to third base, without sliding.

“I felt a little weird when I stepped in the batter’s box,” said Reyes, who missed most of last season with a bum right hamstring tendon. “It had been a long time, and when I hit the ball, I said, ‘Oh my God, I have to run now.’ But my leg is good and I didn’t have to worry about it.”

Reyes wore a huge smile after his triple, a sight that reminded the Mets how fun things can be when their starting shortstop is healthy.

“This team is at its best when he’s at his best,” David Wright said. “In order for us to get to where we want to go, we’re going to need a healthy Jose Reyes.”
