MLB’s cold stove, ever so slightly, has begun to thaw.

Nearly a week after free agency began, left-hander Robbie Ray became the first free agent to sign a deal, agreeing to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Blue Jays on Saturday, ESPN reported.

The Blue Jays had acquired Ray from the Diamondbacks in August and the 29-year-old went on to post a 4.79 ERA across five appearances, four of them starts, with Toronto. Ray has a career 4.26 ERA across seven seasons in the major leagues, including an All-Star campaign in 2017.

While MLB’s free-agent period is never as much of an immediate frenzy as it is in the NBA, NHL or even the NFL, it was expected to be even slower this year. With teams facing financial challenges because of the pandemic and a shortened season without any fans, it remains to be seen just how much free-agent contracts will be impacted.

Ray, meanwhile, rejoins a Blue Jays rotation that is led by AL Cy Young finalist Hyun-jin Ryu,
