Nolan Arenado didn’t hesitate for a second after Luis Perdomo threw behind him in the third inning Wednesday.

The Rockies All-Star third baseman threw his bat and helmet to the side and rushed the mound in anger, believing the wild pitch was the Padres pitcher’s retaliation for a number of hit batsmen in the series between the two teams.

Perdomo threw his glove at the oncoming Arenado before backtracking and putting his fists up for a fight. Arenado continued chasing him and just missed landing a right hook as Perdomo ducked his head. A benches-clearing brawl ensued as players from both teams rushed the field in defense of their teammates.

Arenado and Perdomo were ejected along with the Rockies’ Gerardo Parra and German Marquez, who was the starting pitcher for Colorado, and the Padres’ A.J. Ellis. Parra reportedly punched Ellis during the scuffle.

Games between the division rivals have been chippy, with six hit batsmen over five games. Padres center fielder Manuel Margot landed on the 10-day DL before Wednesday’s game with bruised ribs after he was hit by a pitch during the Padres’ 5-2 win a day earlier. Two more plunks in the early innings Wednesday meant Arenado had had enough.
