The Twins have enough lefty threats in their lineup that Joe Girardi wanted extra coverage in the Yankees bullpen. That explained the manager’s decision to add Damaso Marte to the team’s ALDS roster. Chad Gaudin also made the cut, giving the Yankees 11 pitchers.

“With the lefties that Minnesota have, we thought it was beneficial to add a second left-hander,” Girardi said. “We went around and around about the guys we were going to carry and we felt this was the best way to do our roster.”

As expected, the Yankees will keep three catchers: Jorge Posada, Jose Molina and Francisco Cervelli. Freddy Guzman, who would have provided an extra pinch-running threat, did not make the roster.
