The two best teams in the AL will deliver an interesting ALCS, and here’s how the Blue Jays and Royals stack up at each position:

First base

Despite a .190 ALDS average, the Royals’ Eric Hosmer is among the best in the game. Toronto’s Chris Colabello hits left-handed pitching but K.C doesn’t have a lefty starter. Switch-hitter Justin Smoak looking for first postseason hit for the Jays.

Edge: Royals

Second base

Ben Zobrist hit .333 against the Astros for K.C.; Ryan Goins went 0-for-17 against the Rangers.

Edge: Royals

Shortstop

Three months ago Troy Tulowitzki was better than Alcides Escobar. That’s no longer true.

Third base

Josh Donaldson has a chance to be the AL MVP. Mike Moustakas is solid.

Edge: Blue Jays

Left field

Ben Revere was part of the Blue Jays turning the season around in August. Alex Gordon is good but not playing as well as Revere.

Edge: Blue Jays

Center field

Kevin Pillar is among the best at tracking down balls and hit .333 against the Rangers. Lorenzo Cain is the best at going after balls and a bigger bat in the Royals’ lineup.

Edge: Royals

Right field

Jose Baustista can flip all the bats he wants if he hits homers and is a better defender than Alex Rios.

Edge: Blue Jays

Catcher

It’s not often Russell Martin takes a back seat to another catcher. He does to Salvador Perez.

Edge: Royals

Designated hitter

Edwin Encarnacion and Kendrys Morales are very dangerous.

Rotation

David Price’s postseason results are baffling. Johnny Cueto was terrific in Game 5 of the ALDS.

Edge: Even

Bullpen

The Royals have more experience than the Blue Jays’ kids.

Edge: Royals

Bench

Colabello gives the Blue Jays a big right-handed bat. Terrance Gore and Jarrod Dyson can steal bases for K.C.

Edge: Even

Manager

Ned Yost came within one game of winning World Series last year. John Gibbons doesn’t get enough credit for Blue Jays winning AL East.

Edge: Even

Prediction: Royals in 7

Four games at spacious Kauffman Stadium fit the speedy Royals game better than the muscular Blue Jays.
