PORT ST. LUCIE — Johan Santana was more interested in throwing all his pitches and doing so without pain tonight than he was the numbers from his spring-training debut against the Marlins. The Mets obviously shared those same concerns, considering Santana’s brush with tightness in his left elbow two weeks ago.
“That was the whole key,” Santana said of avoiding injury tonight. “I threw my changeup and I threw my slider — some good ones, too. I was also able to throw my fastball inside, which is all you hope for in [your] first time out. It’s all about feeling healthy and getting strong.”
