The Post’s Steve Serby sat down with the Mets shortstop, who is going head to head with Derek Jeter in this weekend’s Subway Series:
Q: Who would you say is the best baseball player in New York?
A: So many good players here on the New York Mets and the Yankees on the other side, too, so I can’t really tell who’s the best.
Q: Some people say you are.
A: I appreciate that, but I don’t put that stuff in my head because I play the game and don’t worry about nothing else.
Q: MVP?
A: I don’t think about that at all.
Q: Gold Glove?
A: There are a lot of great shortstops in this league, so let’s see.
Q: Why do kids like you so much?
A: They see how I play, how I try to enjoy the game as much as possible. I have fun when I play. They see that and they maybe say in their mind, ‘I want to play like Jose Reyes.’
Q: They see the enthusiasm.
A: Exactly.
Q: When you walk in the door after a good game, do your parents and girlfriend greet you with, “Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose?”
A: (Laughs). No, they just say “you got a good game,” stuff like that.
Q: When you heard “Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose” for the first time?
A: I was just trying to do something special for the fans, something to make them excited.
Q: So that motivates you?
A: Yeah … I like that.
Q: Do you think you’re an exciting player to watch?
A: [Smiles]. That’s what the people say. I just try to play the game 100 percent, play hard, hustle and try to put us in position to win.
Q: What do you think you’ll do first, hit 30 home runs or steal 100 bases?
A: Good one right there (smiles). Don’t really know, man. I got more stolen bases than home runs, so I’ll have to say maybe 100’s gonna be first.
Q: Do you think you’ll be able to do both?
A: I don’t want to say no, don’t want to say yes, because it’s tough to do.
Q: Money can’t change you?
A: No.
Q: How do you know?
A: It changed my life but not my personality. My personality is still there in my heart, so it’s not gonna change that (smiles).
Q: Are you ever in a bad mood?
A: Maybe when I miss a pitch or something like that. But I put everything behind me and try to enjoy the game as much as possible.
Q: Do you get in a bad mood away from the ballpark?
A: I don’t get in a bad mood in a long time (smiles). When I went home, I saw my two daughters … that changed my life.
Q: You’re always happy?
A: Always. I have to be happy because the teacher told me one day in school, ‘If you be happy every day, you’re gonna be younger and younger.”
Q: Are you happy in traffic?
A: Nothing you can do about it. You cannot go over the car, so you have to wait, man, you have to be patient.
Q: That doesn’t put you in a bad mood?
A: I’m human, I get in bad moods, but not like other people. It takes a long time for me to get in a bad mood.
Q: How does it feel being one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People?”
A: I have to feel good to be on that list (smiles). It’s a great honor for me.
Q: Who else on your team should be on the list?
A: Beltran was one year. He was in the English version.
Q: Did he kid you about being in the Spanish version?
A: No, no, he said congratulations.
Q: Did your girlfriend say anything about it?
A: She liked it (smiles).
Q: She thinks you’re one of the 50 Most Beautiful People, too?
A: No doubt (big smile).
Q: Describe your girlfriend.
A: She always says something good to me, especially when I had a bad game. When you got a girl like that you’re always gonna feel comfortable.
Q: What did you get your mother for Mothers Day?
A: A watch. For my mother and my girlfriend.
Q: How bad does this team want to win a championship?
A: There’s only one goal here, to win the World Series.
Q: Are the Mets becoming more popular than the Yankees.
A: The Yankees are real popular because they won a lot of World Series. We have to start to win World Series too if we’re gonna be more popular than them.
Q: How good is this Mets team?
A: Real good. We get Pedro and Duque back, we’re gonna be dangerous.
Q: You don’t smoke or drink?
A: Red wine once in a while. One glass before I go to bed; not every day, once in a while. Don’t like to drink alcohol because my legs get tight.
Q: You’ve never smoked a cigarette.
A: Never gonna.
Q: You filmed a New Era hat commercial for Spike Lee.
A: Great guy. Funny guy.
Q: You are an inspiration to Dominican kids back home. What do you want to do for them?
A: Probably make a stadium there.
Q: What is it like being Jose Reyes right now?
A: It’s better now because I have a more comfortable life. Not just for me, for my whole family.
Q: How do you like Manhasset?
A: It’s nice there, quiet, a lot of good people, good neighbors.
Q: What do you like to do in Manhattan?
A: Shopping. Fifth Avenue. Go a lot to Niketown.
Q: Have you overtaken Beltran as best dresser?
A: (Laughs). Not yet.
Q: Any particular style you like?
A: Just the simple stuff. Don’t like to be too flashy.
Q: If you knew the world would end in 24 hours, what would you do?
A: Be with my family.
