Beloved Mets fan Seymour Weiner died, the team announced in a post on social media on Tuesday.

The World War II veteran gained fame last year on Opening Day when he was honored as the Veteran of the Game, and fans quickly seized upon his name and lovingly turned him into a meme.

Weiner was ecstatic over the turn of events, and the Mets highlighted him as part of a promotion for a $1 hot dog night at Citi Field last April.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Seymour Weiner,” the Mets said in a statement on X, which included a photo of Weiner from last year’s opening day.

In an interview with The Athletic last year, Weiner called his internet fame  “probably one of the highlights of my life” while also saying that he “couldn’t be more excited” about his internet fame.

Weiner, who was 97 at the time of last season’s Opening Day, was amused by how far the story had gone about his name, specifically mentioning how it reached Australia in The Athletic interview.

And he said he never was bothered by the jabs at his name.

“To me, it’s been so enjoyable,” Weiner said. “In no way does it annoy me. Just look at all the notoriety I got out of it!”

The news quickly made its way around social media with a number of people calling Weiner a “legend.”

Some Reddit threads popped up on Tuesday following the news of his death, with users paying tribute to the fun the Mets fan brought.

“He gave us what we needed when we need it. This season for you Seymour,” one Reddit user wrote.

“None of last years meme magic happened without him,” another wrote.

“Rest in peace Seymour. You are a legend and forever will be in our hearts,” someone else posted.

The Mets will face the Diamondbacks at Citi Field on Tuesday night.
