A viral video shows the moment Tampa Bay Rays ace Shane McClanahan realizes his shoulder is hurt and is unable to start the game.

McClanahan, one of the Cy Young front-runners in the American League, was scratched from his start Tuesday against the Marlins due to left shoulder impingement, according to Bally Sports. In a video from the team’s dugout from before the game, McClanahan appeared emotional as he tested his shoulder – to no avail.

In the video, which was taken about a half hour before his scheduled start, Rays coaches appear to console McClanahan, giving him a hug before he walked out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old appeared visibly upset about being unable to pitch, as he put his hand on his head and walked away in frustration.

Shawn Armstrong ended up taking the mound for the Rays, who defeated Miami, 7-2, to move to 71-57. The concern obviously remains for the team’s best pitcher, though the southpaw was in good spirits after the game.

“We’re actually pretty optimistic about it,” McClanahan said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “We don’t think it’s anything major, hopefully. And I think we’re going to be all rIght. … We’ve got to get some more clarity on it, do some further stuff. But as of right now, I think ‘cautiously optimistic’ is the right word for it.”

McClanahan is 11-5 this season with a 2.20 ERA, the fourth-best mark in the majors. Along with Justin Verlander – who also recently suffered an injury, landing on the IL Tuesday – he has been considered a favorite for the Cy Young award.
