After the Mets signed Gary Sheffield, I asked David Wright about playing third base against a righty hitter long considered to have, perhaps, the fastest bat in the majors. “When he was with the Yankees in the Subway Series, he undressed me a few times,” Wright said. “He hit rockets at me. Those are the most uneasy at-bats I have ever experienced in the big leagues, playing third base with Gary Sheffield up.”
Then Wright thought about it a moment and said he had one other scenario that was unnerving: “Moises Alou vs. Tom Glavine‘s cutter.”
