The Sho’ will go on.
Shohei Ohtani’s left shoulder may be sore, but the Dodgers star is expected to play Game 3 of the World Series on Monday against the Yankees in The Bronx, according to manager Dave Roberts.
Ohtani was examined Sunday in Southern California, a day after he suffered a subluxation (partial dislocation) of his left shoulder in an attempted steal of second base. Roberts said he was informed by the team’s training staff Sunday that Ohtani should be in position to play, as the Dodgers look to extend their 2-0 lead in the Series.
Shohei Ohtani injured his shoulder sliding into second base during the seventh inning of Game 2 on Oct. 26. Jason Szenes / New York PostRoberts said Ohtani’s issue will be pain tolerance — it is unlikely he can worsen the shoulder by playing.
“I don’t see him being compromised. It’s the left shoulder, which is the back shoulder,” Roberts said before a team workout at Yankee Stadium. “I don’t see how that affects his hitting if he’s able to go. I really don’t.”
Roberts said he didn’t have the results of tests performed on Ohtani, but the presumptive National League MVP was feeling better Sunday than a night earlier. Ohtani was expected to take dry swings Sunday night after traveling to New York separately from the team so he could be evaluated.

The Dodgers already have one significant member of their lineup playing at less than full strength in Freddie Freeman, who is dealing with a right ankle sprain.
Freeman has been the hero of this series, with a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. He also homered in Game 2.
“I think honestly it’s just per [Ohtani’s] tolerance,” Roberts said. “I guess you could put it in the Freddie bucket, but guys have had this before and played. It’s just everyone’s tolerance.”
Ohtani became MLB’s first 50-50 player this season by hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases. His presence has been felt in the postseason with a .260/.403/.460 slash line with three homers and 10 RBIs. Two of those homers were hit against the Mets in the NLCS.
He is 1-for-8 (.125) with a double and a caught stealing in the first two games of this series.
In addition to Freeman’s heroics, the Dodgers have gotten big hits from Teoscar Hernandez and Tommy Edman (both also homered in Game 2).
Shohei Ohtani exited with a shoulder injury during the seventh inning of Game 2 on Oct. 26. Jason Szenes / New York PostThe possibility Ohtani will be anything but 100 percent doesn’t bother Roberts.
“If he is able to play, willing to play, he’s going to play,” Roberts said. “[Clarke] Schmidt will know that Shohei’s in the box, so that means everything.”
Ohtani arrived to the Dodgers last offseason on a heavily deferred 10-year contract worth $700 million.
On that deal, he will make $2 million annually until 2034 — after which he will receive $68 million yearly for the ensuing decade.
Walker Buehler, the Dodgers’ scheduled Game 3 starting pitcher, was asked what Ohtani’s presence has meant to the team this season
“Any time you have probably the best baseball player in the world, it’s going to help and frees up some of the other guys to play with a little less pressure and more freedom,” Buehler said. “Shohei’s been great … the kind of person he is. And we didn’t know all that when we were getting him. He’s been awesome for the clubhouse and awesome for our team.”
Ohtani, who has been limited to DH this season after last year undergoing ligament reconstruction in his right elbow, is expected to resume pitching next year.
Buehler said he’s sought pitching advice from the right-hander.
“I ask him about the splitter all the time,” Buehler said. “But it won’t quite do it for me the way it does for him.”
