Shohei Ohtani is back — well, sort of.
The Los Angeles Angels’ two-way wunderkind will make his season debut Monday night, batting third as the DH against the Detroit Tigers.
Ohtani, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, has been rehabbing from offseason Tommy John surgery on his right pitching elbow.
While Ohtani won’t return to the mound until 2020, his batting exploits will be welcomed by an Angels squad (15-19) that currently ranks 20th in runs. On his way to beating out the Yankees’ duo of Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres for rookie of the year, Ohtani slashed .285/.361/.564 with 22 home runs and 61 RBIs in 104 games.
Ohtani pitched to a 4-2 record and 3.31 ERA in 10 games during his widely anticipated first season in the majors.
