From halfheartedly wriggling to Miley Cyrus to the long-awaited arms of Dad back from war, all in a few seconds.

That was the emotional journey of a young fan of the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A affiliate of the Cubs on Saturday, the Fourth of July.

The boy was part of what he believed to be a dance contest on the field of Smokies Park, but actually was part of the growing trend of surprise military reveals.

After blindly shaking it to “Party in the USA,” his blindfold was removed as a breathless crowd waited for him to turn around and see his father, Sgt. Adam Dowell of the U.S. Army, back from active duty overseas. The May-December shift in the boy’s demeanor as he processes whom he’s staring at is enough for anyone to reach for the tissues.
