The Yankees are obviously going to have to wait for awhile before making their first selection. That said, here are a few names of players that could potentially fall to them at the end of the first round, where they will go with the No. 29 overall selection. Kyle Gibson, Missouri RHP: Gibson was ranked No. 4 overall by Baseball America before it was discovered he had a stress fracture in his right arm within the last couple weeks. The injury should be healed before the August 15 signing deadline, and Gibson could wind up being one of the steals in the draft.

Aaron Crow, RHP: Crow was drafted by the Nationals last year but was unable to reach a contract agreement with Washington by the August 15 deadline. He has since pitched for Fort Worth of the Independent League, but is considered to be one of the top talents in this draft. He could slip because of continuing signability concerns, but he’s just the kind of guy the Yankees could be willing to pounce on.

Tanner Scheppers, RHP: Like Crow, Scheppers wasn’t signed after being a second round pick by the Pirates last year. However, unlike Crow, the problem with Scheppers was more of an injury one than a dollars one. Scheppers has had repeated shoulder troubles, but he might have the stuff to be the second-best pitcher in this draft after Strasburg. He’s been healthy with the St. Paul Saints, and could be a name that falls to the Yankees late in Round One.

Tyler Matzek, LHP, California HS: Matzek is considered to be the No. 3 overall prospect in the draft, but has said he wants to pass the record $7 million dollar bonus figure for both Josh Beckett and Rick Porcello in the past. The Yankees have said they don’t want to spend over the barrel on the draft, but would they be willing to pass on a talent like Matzek if he is on the board at No. 29?
