PORT ST. LUCIE — David Wright is amused to learn of the budding grassroots Internet campaign to get him to grow a mustache. He is also unswayed. A group of fans is so determined that it started a Web site — thewrightstache.com — to fuel the movement, which has gotten national attention lately from several prominent sports humor sites. The founders have even put together a video and printed up T-shirts.

Their stated motto: “The internet leader in encouraging David Wright to grow a mustache since 2009. Because naked lips don’t win championships.”

According to Wright, the fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

“I don’t think I could grow one even if I wanted to,” he said today, stroking his chin.
