POST ST. LUCIE — Steven Matz allowed two hits over four shutout innings against the Marlins in his final spring appearance. The lefty’s next start will come Sunday against the Cardinals at Citi Field. Matz finished with four solid starts after beginning the exhibition season with two clunkers.
“I know the phrase is ‘it’s just spring training,’ but that is really the way it is,” Matz said. “You’ve just got to get out there and get reps and feel comfortable and now at this point we’ve got to step on the gas and go, so I feel that’s where I am at.”
Mickey Callaway confirmed that Matz, Matt Harvey and Seth Lugo will pitch in succession after Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom start the first two games of the season.
The Mets signed lefty reliever Fernando Abad to a minor league contract. Abad, 32, was 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 48 appearances last season with the Red Sox.
Amed Rosario went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the Mets’ 4-3 victory over the Marlins to finish the Grapefruit League season. Rosario batted .313 this spring.
Corey Taylor allowed two earned runs on three hits over two innings in relief. The right-hander finished the spring with a 4.00 ERA in eight appearances.
Yoenis Cespedes made a strong throw to the plate to nail J.B. Shuck attempting to score in the fourth inning. Cespedes also blasted a homer, his sixth of the exhibition season.
The Mets will close camp Monday with a scrimmage against Triple-A Las Vegas. Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey are both scheduled to pitch.
