Summer of Hell never materialized underground. New Yorkers received the same miserable service we’ve grown accustomed to. But hellish summer did take its toll at the Daily Snooze.

With readership/circulation reaching new lows the tabloid was sold this week by Mort Zuckerman to nationwide publisher Tronc for the sum of $1. Chicago based firm, which will assume all liabilities, tried to talk Morty down to 75 cents but he held firm. Best wishes to Tronc and our crosstown rival. But Stitches would have opted for a selection from the $1 menu at McDonald’s.

Take Two Friday. Last-place Phillies send Jake Thompson (who?) to the mound. Jake yielded three hits last week while striking out seven Marlins. He’ll be tested by the Nats’ potent lineup. 10 units on the Phils and 10 units on the Blue Jays as Marcus Stroman shakes off an elbow injury to tame the Tigers.

Miserable night in Pittsburgh but we got the W. Cubs beat the Pirates 8-2 in a rain-delayed affair. Jon Lester was solid, yielding one run over six innings. Account at a healthy 595 gronks.
