Riding a three-game winning streak after sweeping the Royals, the Yankees host the Mets — who have lost their last two — in The Bronx Tuesday evening to begin the second, and final, Subway Series of the 2023 season.

Just under a week before MLB’s Aug. 1 trade deadline, the Yankees (53-47) find themselves in last place in the stacked American League East and on the outside looking in of the Wild card picture, entering Tuesday 2.5 games out of the final spot as they anxiously wait for Aaron Judge to return from his toe injury.

The Mets (46-53) entered the day seven games out of the final Wild Card spot and way out of the race to win the National League East.

For both disappointing teams, the next few games will be critical in how they approach the deadline.

That begins against each other, who split their first series last month.

Domingo German’s Yankees rotation spot could be in jeopardy after Subway Series flow

By Mark Sanchez

A few hours before Tuesday’s game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated he had no plans to experiment with a six-man rotation when Nestor Cortes returns.

The rehabbing Cortes is still a few turns away from big-league relevance, which means Domingo German likely has a few more chances to prove he belongs as a starter.

If German is on a mission to keep his job, that undertaking took a hit Tuesday.

The once-perfect German was far from it in a 9-3 loss to the Mets in The Bronx, a poor start to the Subway Series for the home team and its starter.

German allowed six runs in six innings, getting burned both by weak contact that found grass and three blasted shots that sailed over the grass and the outfield wall.

Mets’ Justin Verlander excelling at right time with MLB trade deadline near

By Mike Puma

Justin Verlander is peaking just in time to enhance his trade value.

Whether the right-hander gets dealt ahead of next Tuesday’s deadline is another matter altogether, but teams in need of pitching have every reason to at least check in with the Mets, especially given Verlander’s work over the last five weeks.

On Tuesday he had a second straight superb outing, with six shutout innings in the Mets’ 9-3 victory over the Yankees in The Bronx.

Verlander allowed two hits and walked four with six strikeouts, departing at 98 pitches.
