Cody Bellinger, Yankees break open rout of Mets after brutal Pete Alonso error to take Subway Series

By Mark Sanchez

Pete Alonso’s throw to home missed the catcher by a country mile and led to the Yankees scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bronx Bombers poured on five more runs in the inning in an 8-2 win over the Mets to take the rubber game of the Subway Series in The Bronx on Sunday.

The Yankees broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth when Jorbit Vivas hit into a fielder’s choice with runners on second and third, and Alonso sent the throw to the plate over the head of catcher Francisco Alvarez, allowing Jasson Domínguez to score.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a liner to center to drive in a second run and Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam to cap the Yankees’ offensive explosion. Bellinger had six RBIs.

Yankees defeat Mets after Cody Bellinger grand slam, Pete Alonso error

By Andrew Crane

The Yankees won the first set of Subway Series games this year, using a Cody Bellinger grand slam to defeat the Mets, 8-2.

Pete Alonso's error set up the big hit and also, at the time, allowed the Yankees to take the lead. Devin Williams continued his recent resurgence with three more clutch outs. And on a night when the Mets found a way to climb back into the game against ace Max Fried, brutal defense spoiled their chance to leave with a series win in Juan Soto's return to The Bronx.

Juan Soto changing mind on ESPN mic’d-up segment led to Brandon Nimmo replacement at Subway Series

By Dan Martin

Juan Soto was the center of attention again on Sunday, getting booed loudly when he was introduced before the game and during his at-bat in the first inning.

As Aaron Boone noted before the game, it’s something Soto may have to deal with throughout his Mets career when he comes to The Bronx.

“It probably could be,” Boone said before Sunday’s game. “It’s New York.”

But the Soto Subway Series did not include the star getting mic’d up for “Sunday Night Baseball,” which was the original plan.

Pete Alonso's brutal throwing error gives Yankees lead

By Andrew Crane

Pete Alonso has saved the Mets at plenty of points this season, especially with his late-game heroics at the plate, but might've cost the Mets on Sunday.

Jorbit Vivas worked an 11-pitch at-bat against Ryne Stanek before sending a grounder to Alonso with the infield in. His throw sailed wide of the plate, allowing Jasson Dominguez to score and give the Yankees a 3-2 lead on the ugly error.

Paul Goldschmidt then followed with an RBI single, and the Yankees added a run to their lead
