PHILADELPHIA — CC Sabathia is convinced Dellin Betances will be an All-Star for the fifth straight season and it has nothing to do with the pitchers being very close friends.
Sabathia said Betances’ early-season problems should not deny Betances being part of the American League bullpen.
“He is one of the best [relievers] in the league, that is who he is,’’ Sabathia said when asked what he thought of Betances’ chances of being on manager A.J. Hinch’s staff. “We all struggle and he has had his ups and downs, but I think the talent is undeniable. That is where I am at.’’
Lately, it is impossible to disagree with Sabathia about Betances’ being one of the best in the business because he has been better than good and posted eye-popping numbers which don’t resemble what Betances produced earlier in the year.
From May 23 through Monday, Betances worked 15 games and the Yankees went 13-2. He allowed one earned run in 16 innings for a 0.56 ERA, held hitters to a .041 batting average, a .230 on-base percentage and a .270 OPS. During that stretch Betances stuck out 28, walked 10 and didn’t allow a homer.
Sabathia is correct, Betances’ talent can’t be questioned.
Yet, if the 30-year-old isn’t named to the AL squad, a shaky stretch of 15 outings from March 29 to May 10 will likely be the reason.
The Yankees went 9-6 in those games in which he allowed 18 hits (four homers), batters hit .281 with a .333 on-base percentage and a .818 OPS against him. The only positives were the five walks allowed compared to 30 strikeouts.
While those struggles were on display, Aaron Boone and Betances remained confident better days were ahead. Boone said Betances’ delivery was too good not to improve and the pitcher said he had never thrown the ball better in his career.
“I felt good and was repeating my delivery, pounding the strike zone,’’ Betances said of the early-season results. “There was some hard contact but not real hard. I know I felt good.’’
Now, the numbers match the feeling, but Betances wasn’t ready to campaign for an All-Star spot. And true to his personality he talked up helping the Yankees succeed and other members of the Yankees’ bullpen which was the main reason they entered Tuesday night’s action with the best record (51-25) in baseball.
“No, to be honest,’’ Betances said when asked if he had thought of being in Washington on July 17. “I have been focusing on doing the best I can to help the team win.’’
Of the Yankees relievers, Aroldis Chapman is the closest to a lock since he had converted 23-of-24 save chances, had a 1.29 ERA and struck out 60 in 35 innings. Starter Luis Severino, who faced the Phillies Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park with an 11-2 ledger and 2.24 ERA, is almost certain to be selected and perhaps start the All-Star Game.
Dellin BetancesCorey SipkinYet, according to Betances, there are other arms in the Yankees’ pen that should be considered.
“We have a lot of guys who deserve to be All-Stars,’’ Betances said. “Chappy throws 100 [mph] and look at Chad Green.’’
On another team Green would get All-Star consideration based on his 4-1 record, 2.17 ERA and 51 strikeouts and 31 hits in 37 ¹/₃ innings.
The Yankees aren’t any other team and Betances isn’t any other reliever.
According to Elias, Betances is the third pitcher in Yankees’ history to allow one hit or fewer over a span of at least 14 appearances. Since the Blue Jays’ Devon Travis’ single on June 6 in Toronto, hitters were 0-for-27 with 18 strikeouts. That was the second longest current streak of hitless at-bats.
The Marlins’ Kyle Barraclough had held opponents hitless in 36 at-bats since May 22 going into Tuesday night’s action.
Or as Sabathia said, “Undeniable.’’
