BALTIMORE — The Yankees were linked to Manny Machado last offseason, but talks between the teams didn’t get very far. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Yankees are again checking in to see what it would take to land the perennial All-Star. Here’s what acquiring the 26-year-old would mean for the Yankees.

Q: Machado said again Monday night he has no intention of leaving shortstop and going back to third base, so what does that mean for Didi Gregorius?

A: Probably not much for now. If the Yankees were to acquire Machado, they would try to convince him to play third base for the rest of the season. Machado will be a free agent after the season and wants to be paid like a shortstop star, but two-plus months at third — and perhaps a postseason run — wouldn’t affect his market in the offseason.

Q: If Machado comes to the Yankees to play third base, what happens to Miguel Andujar?

A: Machado’s arrival would figure to affect Andujar most directly, with the rookie likely heading back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre — if he’s not included in the trade. It would be a tough break for the 23-year-old, who has exceeded expectations but is not at Machado’s level. Another possibility would be trying Andujar at first base. Andujar worked at the position this spring after Brandon Drury was acquired, but he hasn’t played in any regular-season games at the position.

Q: Could the Yankees add Machado’s salary and still stay under the $197 million luxury-tax threshold?

A: Yes. Machado is currently owed around $7 million of his $16 million contract this season. That number would go down to about $5.5 million if Baltimore waits until the deadline. The Yankees’ payroll sits at roughly $181 million, so they have room to maneuver.

Q: Would they still be able to add a pitcher along with Machado?

A: Sure. One of the reasons the Yankees continue to look at Machado is there is a lack of elite starting pitching on the market, but it is affordable.

Q: Would the Yankees sign Machado to a contract following the season?

A: The fact that Machado will be a free agent limits what Baltimore can get for him, since he’ll be a rental. The team that trades for him might believe it has an advantage in keeping him around, giving itself a two-month head start on convincing Machado to stay. But Machado and Bryce Harper figure to be in store for the two largest free-agent contracts in baseball history. The Yankees’ pursuit of Machado doesn’t figure to change much if he’s already in the Bronx.

Q: If the Yankees trade for Machado and then he leaves as a free agent, would they get a compensatory draft pick?

A: No. Teams only get a draft pick if the player has spent the entire season with them.

Q: How much would it take to sign Machado?

A: A lot. Machado just turned 26 and was named to his fourth All-Star team and has never been more productive at the plate. After undergoing knee surgery in 2014, he’s been very durable. Some expect Machado to land a $400 million deal. The Yankees could be players, although it remains to be seen if staying under the luxury tax is a goal owner Hal Steinbrenner wants to target beyond this season.

Q: What are some other obstacles to a potential deal?

A: Orioles owner Peter Angelos has long shown an unwillingness to trade stars to other AL East teams, especially the Yankees. Machado’s other suitors, including the Brewers, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Indians and Phillies, don’t face that hurdle. The Yankees have as many young, quality assets as anyone in the sport and could offer the best deal. But if the Yankees want to sign Machado after the season, and he is still set on being a shortstop, they would have another decision to make, especially since Gregorius isn’t a free agent until 2020.
