The last time Mets fans saluted Tom Seaver he was throwing heat, because of course he was.
Seaver will not be making any more public appearances, his family announced in a statement Thursday that stated the legendary, Hall of Fame pitcher has been diagnosed with dementia.
So it’s a good time to remember the last time Mets fans could tell one of the most popular players in the team’s history how they felt about him.
The 2013 All-Star Game — a game for the Mets and Citi Field to show off their best and brightest — had Seaver as the guest of honor.
Wearing a No. 41 Mets jersey that fans wish could have been worn his entire career, the 12-time All-Star stepped to the mound, hesitantly took a step forward and delivered — a strike to David Wright. The Franchise and the captain then embraced.
After the Thursday announcement, tributes poured out for the 74-year-old.
“You guys have probably heard about Tom Seaver and I just wanted to say a few words,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “To have such a special baseball player, such a special pitcher, a legend of the game of baseball is a tremendous honor for our organization. You can’t ask for a better pitcher, your best pitcher ever in your organization, so our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.”
Mike Piazza said the news “breaks my heart.”
So sad to hear Tom Seaver has dementia. He will always be the heart and soul of the @Mets ,the standard which all Mets aspire to, this breaks my heart. Do not feel worthy to be mentioned in the same breath, yet honored to be with him in the @baseballhall#Mets#MLB
