After years of hassles in getting their players from Triple-A to the big leagues, the Mets are ready for their own version of Leaving Las Vegas.
An industry source Monday confirmed the Mets’ plans to buy the minor-league team in Syracuse and move their Triple-A affiliate there from Las Vegas. The deal is expected to be announced Tuesday at a press conference in Syracuse, although it’s still undetermined for which season the move will take effect.
The Mets have spent the last five seasons with their top minor-league affiliate based in Las Vegas, which has presented problems getting players to New York in a timely manner.
In addition, the Triple-A affiliate will be leaving the hitters’ friendly Pacific Coast League for the International League, giving Mets’ talent evaluators a better opportunity to gauge pitchers and hitters.
The Mets would own and operate the Syracuse franchise in an arrangement similar to the one with their Single-A team in Brooklyn.
