Aaron Boone put the pinstripes back on Wednesday afternoon in his introductory press conference as Yankees manager.
Boone detailed his move from the ESPN booth to the Yankees clubhouse, which came to fruition over the past month.
“The juices have started to flow the last couple of years,” Boone said at Yankee Stadium press conference. “ESPN allowed me to stay close to the game that I love. It’s been a couple of years now, I’ve felt this tug kind of calling me a little bit. I found myself more and more looking at the game through a manager’s lens.”
But that crystallized this postseason, when Boone covered all three rounds for ESPN Radio. He said being around the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts and the Astros’ AJ Hinch made him realize just how much he would want to run a team of his own.
“In a lot of ways I was looking at a mirror with these guys,” Boone said. “It solidified my mind that I wanted to be with these guys.”
Then a month ago Boone received a call, while watching his son’s flag football game, from Yankees GM Brian Cashman asking him if he wanted to interview for the job.

“It was long, it was tough, it was so fun,” Boone said of the seven-hour interview. “I left here and people asked me, ‘How’d you do?’ My answer was, ‘I have no idea.’ I think I represented really well. I came out here to get the job. I was very much at peace waiting for the call to come down. When I got the call from Brian it was an emotional moment. Then it was hyper-focused on going from how can we get the Yankees better.”
