While having a balanced roster is the key to success in Rotisserie baseball during March’s draft/auction season, a few key injuries or underperforming players can cause a major strategy shift by the All-Star break — leading owners to begin targeting the categories in which they can move up a few places with a handful more of counting stats.

Your overall roster may look like a haphazardly patched-together mess on the surface, but it could be subtly attacking several categories at once in tight races.

Billy Hamilton is the prime example of a category-boosting player. Batting ninth on most nights, Hamilton has scored just seven runs so far in June and put up a .222 average, but has stolen 14 bases this month. If you can handle the hit in runs (his average should improve going forward), Hamilton could be a boon for a Roto team close to several others in steals.

Luis Valbuena and Maikel Franco quietly have been powerful in June, hitting nine and eight home runs, respectively. But that still is not where the best value can be had. David Ortiz is a trade target who is due to heat up soon. His ISO, FB percentage, and BaBIP are all currently at career lows. He will regress to the mean, and plenty of power will come along with the regression.

With a 4.35 ERA, Andrew Cashner has been a bit of a disappointment for his fantasy owners. But some peripherals should give would-be trade partners a bit of a boost. His strikeout rate (8.4 K/9) is well above his career average and is the highest it has been since 2012. His HR/FB rate is well above average, and his velocity is right where it should be. Cashner not only should continue to strike out batters, but should do so while lowering his ratios.
