The Padres are reportedly willing to hand over a significant return for Red Sox star Mookie Betts — on one condition.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres are prepared to “send two young major leaguers and at least one prospect” to Boston along with veteran Wil Myers in exchange for Betts.

However, San Diego is apparently pushing for the Red Sox to come up significantly in the portion of Myers’ contract ($61 million over the next three seasons) they are willing to take on.

The report details that some within the Padres organization view acquiring Betts “as only marginally possible.” Partly because many believe Boston won’t want to eat more of Myers’ contract and that the deep-pocketed Dodgers are rumored to be in on the Betts conversation.

On Sunday, the Athletic reported that the Dodgers, Padres and Diamondbacks were all interested in Betts.

The Union-Tribune reported that the Red Sox are currently offering to assume half of Myers’ contract, but the Padres wish to pay about a quarter of their previous obligation to Myers in order to acquire Betts’ salary.

The Padres are willing to include outfielder Manuel Margot or Josh Naylor and starting pitcher Cal Quantrill or Joey Lucchesi in the deal for Betts.

Myers, who was an All-Star in 2016, signed a six-year $83 million extension with the Padres in 2017 and then blasted a career-high 30 homers the following season. He finished with a .239/.321/.418 slash line in 2019.

Betts, who is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season, has previously hinted of his plans to test to the market. Although he primarily played right field for the Red Sox, Betts did make some starts in center field, where the Padres would likely play him.
