Rockies officials privately let it be known Jose Reyes would never play for the team again. So no surprise Colorado designated him for assignment Wednesday.

The mystery: Will Reyes ever play in the majors again?

No team is going to claim Reyes and assume the roughly $39 million he is owed through next year. Not when he will be a free agent no later than June 26 (Colorado has 10 days, beginning Thursday, to trade or release him). At that point, a club can sign Reyes for the pro-rated minimum.

But will a team do that?

As we have seen with PED-tinged players receiving multi-year contracts (think: Jhonny Peralta, Melky Cabrera, etc.), teams will find ways to explain their actions to enlist a talent. But both within the game and society, domestic abuse is viewed more negatively than is PED use. The Yankees overlooked that to acquire Aroldis Chapman because he is a brilliant reliever.

Reyes’ age (he turned 33 last Saturday) and persistent injuries have diminished the elite athleticism that made him a star in his prime. His offensive game was down considerably last year and his defensive game was abysmal. It is hard to find a personnel person who thinks he is still a starting shortstop.

For that package of skills, would a team sign Reyes and have to explain to their fan base why they are bringing in someone who just went through a 52-game suspension for domestic abuse? The Rockies, despite having to pay the remainder of his contract, were not even willing to keep him around as a utilityman.

The Mets and Yankees have displayed no interest in Reyes. Perhaps a club such as the Royals, who have gotten so little production from their middle infield, would be willing to give Reyes a minor league deal, see what he has at Triple-A and then consider a promotion. But teams certainly are not going to line up for this degraded (in every way) version of Reyes.
