Talk about an off day.
The Kansas City Royals flew from Baltimore into Boston on Wednesday, forfeiting their day off ahead of a weekend series in Cleveland, to finish off a rain-suspended game that took just 12 minutes for the Red Sox to win on Thursday.
In the continuation of an Aug. 7 matchup — tied at four apiece in the top of the 10th — the Royals saw just 10 pitches on the afternoon before Boston’s Brock Holt hit a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning to give the Red Sox a 5-4 win.
Officially, the game took 3:48 to play, with the Sox heading to San Diego on a winning note.
Royals manager Ned Yost would have liked to see things take a little longer or not have been made up so soon. He suggested on Aug. 8 that the teams meet after the season ended, with his squad nearly 30 games out of a playoff spot and called it the “the smart thing to do.” Instead, he was stuck losing a rest day and a game.
“I don’t think there really was another solution,” he said after the loss. “The only other solution for me was to play it after the season ended, and that would make more sense to me rather than have to disrupt them flying cross-country and us flying, and not having off-days.”
