New York, New York is literally music to Bryce Harper’s ears.
The Nationals superstar and upcoming free agent stepped up to the plate on Wednesday in Atlanta as Frank Sinatra played, a little dig by a Braves organist who used the only tool he had to try to get into Harper’s head.
Earlier, the organist played “Go Cubs Go” when Harper approached the batter’s box, a nod to another possible landing spot (and another possible way to break Washington’s heart). Harper, still just 25, is the jewel of next offseason’s vaunted free-agency class, as he could become baseball’s first $400 million man.
The Yankees were long the feared suitors waiting in the wings, but Giancarlo Stanton may have changed that.
The walk-up music jabs worked for the game — a 7-1 Atlanta victory, in which Harper went 0-for-3 with two walks — but the taunts haven’t affected the outfielder much to begin the year. He’s somehow amped his spectacular game up a notch, launching four home runs in six games, in which he’s batting .333. A Bryce Harper contract year may be something to behold.
