With free agency approaching, Brian Cashman will have numerous choices regarding a replacement for Aaron Hicks next season.

But the Yankees general manager isn’t counting on his $21 million-a-year outfielder to help.

After announcing Thursday that Hicks will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, Cashman didn’t appear confident that Jacoby Ellsbury could help fill the void. Ellsbury, 36, hasn’t played in a game in over two years due to various injuries, including a torn left hip labrum and plantar fasciitis.

“It’s hard to say based on how things have played out,” Cashman said at the Yankees’ end-of-season press conference. “Right now he’s not someone in a position health-wise where I can answer anything in the affirmative.”

Ellsbury, who signed a seven-year, $153 million contact before the 2014 season, can be bought out of his contract for $5 million after the 2020 season.
