Everyone knows the name, they just might not be sure how to say it.

Giancarlo Stanton, the most fearsome hitter in baseball, was close to joining the Yankees as of Saturday afternoon, so it appears fans in The Bronx will have to learn his pronunciation.

According to Stanton, it sounds like it starts with a “z,” like “ZHON-carlo.”

At least, that’s what he told reporters in 2012, when he announced before spring training with the Marlins that he would no longer be called Mike, as he had from the fifth grade until his third season in the majors.

Until then, he was known as Mike Stanton, but before spring training began that year, Stanton went back to being known by his given name, Giancarlo. By then, he figured people could figure out how to say it.

His full name is Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton.

Stanton told the Associated Press in 2012 he was called Giancarlo at his high school outside of Los Angeles, but switched to Mike because both teachers and fellow classmates had trouble pronouncing his name.

His mother calls him Cruz, and those who know him from his childhood still call him Mike.
