CINCINNATI — In a span of three starts, Matt Harvey has lowered his ERA by a full run and led the Reds to three wins.
The reclamation project the Mets gave up on lasted 5 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday against the Brewers, being forced out by a rain delay before an 8-2 Cincinnati victory.
Harvey had a perfect game going, retiring the first 12 batters before Travis Shaw outflanked a defensive shift with an opposite-field single to left leading off the fifth. Harvey struck out six and walked none, lowering his ERA to 4.91. It was 5.92 after a June 15 start, but 18 1/3 innings of three-run ball have Harvey rolling.
To support Harvey, Jose Peraza kept up Cincinnati’s parade of grand slams. Peraza connected in the sixth inning for the Reds’ ninth slam this year, tying the single-season franchise record set in 2002. It was Cincinnati’s second in two games and third in the last eight — pitcher Mike Lorenzen had a pinch-hit slam Saturday, and pitcher Anthony DeSclafani went deep with the bases loaded on June 24 against the Cubs.
The last-place Reds have won 11 of 14, and the last eight of 11 against teams that were in first place when their series started.
